The Keeper of Hidden Books by Madeline Martin, was a difficult WWII historical fiction novel for me to read. I started the novel 3-4 months ago but discontinued because it reminded me of what was happening in the Ukraine. I recently picked up the book again. The book has an important message though gruesomely sad. It told of Hitler’s forces occupying Warsaw and the massive killing of the Jews and the Polish people who continued to fight for their freedom. The protagonist, Zofia, jumped in to save banished books, her Jewish friend, and then smuggled banned books into her surrounding community with the risk of losing her life. The people were craving the comfort literature provided during the hardships of famine and war. I did finish the book by crying my way through the last third in one evening.
