Wilkerson strategically weaves through the use of a dual timeline and multiple points of view an engaging storyline that reveals the secret past of Eleanor Bennett to her children through a recording played after her death. Her children are left to wonder if they ever knew their mother. I won’t add any more, so there aren’t any spoilers, but there is a reason this book was a New York Times bestseller. Though Eleanor had to leave behind her Caribbean culture and traditions, the one thing she kept was the recipe for Caribbean black cake.
