Living Through a Transition

“Life is a story of transitions… you are always leaving one chapter behind while moving to the next.” ~ Anonymous

When I took my first community college writing class eight years ago, I was looking for connection and a creative outlet. I had retired early from unexpected consequences after major neck surgery and then we moved from the place we’d lived for over 39 years. I lost my connection with a wonderful community of quilting ladies, and many of our friends. I was lonely and needed to find something new to keep me creatively engaged …one that my body wouldn’t have too much trouble with.

I discovered a love for writing, though sadly it is a solitary activity.

After a few writing classes and lots of story ideas generated, I thought I might have a book in me.

Recently, I heard on a podcast that about 82% of Americans have thought of writing a book but only less than 1% of those actually finish the first draft. So, when my writing instructor suggested I pick one story to complete, it stumped me on which one to choose. I had a romance series started (The first and second novellas drafted in a three-part series), and had a rough outline and the character development for a lady detective story, and two children’s books drafted (one with my own illustrations). But I decided on More Than Luck Required. Since then, I have learned it will take more than luck to become a published author.

Some people suggest retiring and shelving your first book. I’ve also heard the first book you write can be like the training wheels for how to write a full-length novel. However, after putting so many years into this book, I want to get this book out into the world. I believe it has a valuable message and within it are tools that could help a reader who might have lived through similar circumstances. Stay tuned.
